Intro: There’s a particular kind of magic in opening the kiln after a firing—a blend of nerves, excitement, and hope. It’s where all the effort, patience, and play come together in a single, silent reveal. This week, I experienced one of those unforgettable moments—one that made me pause, smile, and realize a new chapter in my ceramic journey may have just begun.

Cracking the Kiln: A Moment of Wonder

There’s nothing quite like cracking open the kiln the morning after a firing. It’s a ritual filled with tension, wonder, and joy. No matter how many firings I’ve done, the feeling never grows old. I go to bed with my mind buzzing. Did the glazes behave? Did anything crack? Did the kiln gods smile on this one? I wake up with the excitement of a child on Christmas morning.

This time was no different. I had fired a piece that meant a great deal to me—the largest pot I’ve ever thrown. It was a true test of skill and patience. I spent hours forming it, smoothing every curve, and carefully drawing my designs around the body. The rhythm of the process guided me. I knew it had the potential to become something special.

The Build-Up to the Reveal

I wanted to capture the kiln opening on camera. I aimed to document the moment when effort and anticipation finally met result. But, just as I reached for the camera, I noticed the battery was dead. A small but agonizing delay. I plugged it in for a few minutes—just enough to bring it to life for a couple of quick shots. That extra waiting felt symbolic, like one final test of my patience.

Then, finally, I opened the kiln door.

And there it was.

The Joyful Outcome

My biggest pot stood tall and whole, just as I’d imagined—and perhaps even better. The form held true, the glazes matured in all the right places, and oh, the drawings! A parade of farmyard pigs wrapped around the pot, lively and full of charm. One piggy face looked upward, almost cheekily, as if in on the secret that it had turned out just right. The turquoise glaze on the rim pooled into textured variations, shifting between soft matte and glossy depths, catching the light like morning dew.

There’s something beautiful about the simplicity of it. I hadn’t planned on making pigs part of my signature style, but they keep reappearing in my work—joyful, unbothered, familiar. This piece felt like a natural evolution, a continuation of a theme I hadn’t realized I was growing.

A Collection of Creativeness

This piece joins another creation I’ve become proud of—a vase I fired just a few days earlier. That vase features a procession of farmyard geese, drawn in confident strokes, their wings slightly tucked and beaks lifted. Like the pigs, they feel alive, part of a world I’m slowly shaping with clay, slip, and color.

These animals, drawn with affection and a sense of quiet humor, are becoming part of my visual language. It’s in these small, accumulating moments that I start to see the shape of my own voice as a maker. This voice is reflected not only in the forms I create but also in the spirit of the work. The character emerges from line, texture, and fire.

More Than Just Pottery

Cracking the kiln is more than opening a door. It’s an unveiling of growth, a conversation between intention and chance. It allows the artist to witness how their vision materializes after countless hours of work. This experience of pottery is an extension of oneself and a celebration of the unexpected.

With every firing, I realize that the process is a journey. Each piece tells a story. Each glaze adds a layer of complexity. Each drawing brings laughter and joy. Today, it spoke back with warmth, whimsy, and a piggy grin.

Embracing the Future

As I reflect on this experience, I feel compelled to embrace the adventure that pottery offers. I look forward to the next firing and the anticipation it brings. What new surprises will await me?

Every kiln opening is a revelation. It adds another chapter to my story, woven with patience, creativity, and love for the craft. I can't wait to see what the future holds.

In conclusion, creating pottery is more than a hobby; it is a journey filled with magic and discovery. The excitement builds with every piece, and I continue to evolve as an artist, one kiln opening at a time.
