Stepping Out of Comfort Zones
I’ve just finished a really lovely session with Emily, one of my regulars. She usually prefers handbuilding, but today she decided to step out of her comfort zone and have another go at throwing — something she’s only tried once before.
From the moment she sat at the wheel, I could tell she was ready to give it her all. There’s always a mix of excitement and nerves when trying something new. However, Emily approached it with such calm focus. Over the course of 2.5 hours, she managed to throw four mugs, dry them enough to trim, and even pull handles for the very first time — all in one session! I was so impressed by her determination and how naturally she took to it once she found her rhythm.
The Art of Mug Making
The mugs themselves have turned out beautifully. Emily shaped them into her favourite rounded form, giving them a soft, inviting feel that perfectly reflects her style. Even at this early stage, before they’ve been fired, you can already see their personality shining through. I can’t wait to see how they look once they’re glazed and finished — they’ll be such lovely pieces to use and admire.
A Rewarding Experience
As for me, I was completely in my element today. There’s something incredibly rewarding about guiding someone through a new process and watching their confidence build with each step. I’m also feeling quite proud of how my teaching skills are developing. With every workshop, I notice myself becoming more intuitive and patient — knowing when to step in with guidance and when to let someone discover the feel of the clay for themselves.
It really helps when the person you’re teaching listens carefully and trusts the process. Emily and I worked so well together today — there was a real sense of mutual patience and understanding, and we both gave each other space to learn and grow. Moments like this remind me why I love teaching pottery so much.
The Joy of Learning
Every session brings something new — a little challenge, a shared laugh, and that quiet satisfaction when a piece comes together just right. Watching Emily explore throwing and achieve so much in a single afternoon was such a joy, and it left me feeling inspired too.
If you’ve ever wanted to give pottery a try — whether handbuilding or throwing — I’d love to welcome you to a session in my garden studio. Each workshop is relaxed, creative, and tailored to your pace and interests. You might surprise yourself with what you can make in just a few hours!
