When Things Go Wrong

Today wasn’t a good day.

My mind has been elsewhere — my mum is very unwell in hospital after a fall, and it’s been hard to focus on anything properly. While loading the kiln this morning, I accidentally knocked a student’s greenware heart. It was a beautiful piece that she had lovingly made for her parents, and I’m heartbroken to say that it broke in half.

Letting her know was one of the most difficult parts. It’s never easy delivering bad news, especially when it’s caused by a moment of distraction. I’ve offered her a free session to come back and remake it, and I’m grateful that she’s accepted. Apoorva will be returning on Sunday to give it another go, and I’ll make sure it’s a calm and supportive space for her to create.

Accidents do happen in ceramics — sometimes in the kiln, sometimes in handling — and often they’re beyond anyone’s control. But this time, it was my fault. And when that happens, I believe in holding my hands up and doing what I can to make it right.

This was a painful reminder that we’re all human, and sometimes life spills into the studio whether we want it to or not. I’m doing my best to manage both the clay and the chaos, and I deeply appreciate the kindness and understanding from those who share this creative space with me.
